| The blog has moved ...Yes, it's true. I've joined the Evil Empire over at Blogger. The site is just cleaner and easier for me to use.

| It's all about me ...A recent furor has been raised over a Prof name of Ward L. Churchill, the now former chair of the Ethnic Studies Department at Colorado University in Boulder. Mr. Churchill declared the attacks of Sept. 11 were "a natural and inevitable consequence of what happens as a result of business as usual in the United States." That the victims in the WTC were not innocents but instead "Little Eichmanns", and that the terrorists who attacked us were "combat teams."
The Governor of Colorado has demanded Mr. Churchill be fired for writing these words. His speech at Hamilton College in New York has been cancelled, and America's political Right has taken to calling him a terrorist.
All because he says what no one wants to hear.
ABC News recently ran a story about the "censorship" of conservatives (specifically Christians) on college campuses. This is an old rallying cry of Conservative Christians, especially those who have graduated from college. Being conservatives, these people are (of course) against anything smacking of affirmative action, or quotas. They are only seeking to allow The Truth to be told. Right?
I am eagerly awaiting the first Conservative Christian embrace of Mr. Churchill's case.
In Urbana, Mayor Tod Satterthwaite has come under fire recently for having a pretty short fuse in chambers and out. When asked about these statements by a local reporter, Mayor Tod got shy, stammered and apparently demanded a second interview. Now the reporter has been fired after the second interview didn't go as planned. I'm not supposed to talk about it, as the reporter was a friend of mine. Let's just say Mayor Tod is not a fan of the Truth.
Up in Batavia, Illinois the School Board is floating a $65 million referendum to pay for renovations to the high school. Years ago, when the Big Corporations came asking about the cornfields on Randall Road the Citizens of Batavia were assured that these businesses would bring in much needed tax money. Apparently it wasn't enough, or else they were lying. Either way the taxes on a $200,000 house in Batavia are now well over $5,000 a year.
In the end it appears that few people are interested in Truth anymore. It's too hard to find, I guess. Mr. Churchill undoubtedly has no interest in standing up for the censored Christians, and vice versa. Mayor Todd will probably roll over the much better qualified Prussing and the all important "development" of Urbana will continue unabated. I reckon once we start to feel the True effect of the Wal-Mart tax dollars in our community my house will be too expensive to own.
Whatever. Nevermind. How about that Iraq election? Maybe it was worth it after all...
| On the payroll...So it turns out the Bush administration has actually been paying conservative commentators
to push it's product. This after the Republicans in the
House tried to change the rules in order to make it more difficult to
file an ethics complaint against a Representative.
Thank goodness we now have Morally Upstanding Leaders in charge of the federal government.
| True Story ...We are talking today about the "pursuit of happiness" and how the
government is designed to protect it. So we start talking about what
is "right" and "wrong" in our society, and we get to drug use as a
"wrong". So, of course, the conversation is steered by yours truly
into campustown binge drinking. I give them the background, the money
men, etc. and one of the students responds "don't girls who binge
drink get pregnant?"
And then it hits me. The Great Hypocrisy of them all.
Planned
Parenthood - the end result of the profiteering off of 19 year old bar
entry age. Statistics and studies show that binge drinking leads
to unintended pregnancies, especially among white girls (60%). Studies
also show that a LOT of binge drinking goes on in college. One
need not be a brain surgeon to figure out the rest.
So where is the conservative anger toward underage drinking at the
U of I? Why aren't the anti-abortion crusaders out with picket
lines in front of Kams, or Joe's every Saturday night? Are we
that naive?
Perhaps it is time for the churches in C/U to start taking this seriously. Otherwise, aren't we really just blowing smoke?

| Disgrace.
"The Presidential Medal of Freedom is America's highest civilian award
and, among all American honors, it ranks second to only the
Congressional Medal of Honor the nation's highest military award. This
great honor is reserved for individuals the President deems to have
made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national
interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other
significant public or private endeavors. Though it may be awarded for
singular acts of momentous import, it is generally conferred only for a
lifetime of service or at the conclusion of a distinguished career. The award is 'given only after careful thought, always sparingly so as not to debase its currency.'"
I
think we can now declare that the Medal of Freedom has lost it's
currency. Even Bob Hope was more deserving of this award than George
Tenet, whose mistakes in the run up to the Iraq War will go down in the
history books as the biggest intelligence failures of the last 150
years.
Thank you George Bush for returning dignity and honor to
the White House. It is oh, so wonderful to see that politics will no
longer trump the honor of this office. Nice work, Christian
Conservatives. You've definitely re-elected a winner.
